Nokia touchscreen phones could soon use Swype touchscreen typing technology for superfast messaging. The Finnish phone giant has just invested in the startup, which offers a revolutionary new way to type on a keyboard: read on for all the details.

Swype offers a new way to write on a touchscreen, letting you swipe over letters on a portrait QWERTY keyboard in the order you’d spell a word with, instead of having to prod each individual key, which can be tricky with fingers, even on a responsive capacitive touchscreen. This way, you can hit more than 30 words per minute, and now, Nokia is getting in on the tech by pumping cash into Swype.

Swype is already available for the Samsung Omnia 2 on Windows Mobile, but in the latest round of funding, totalling $5.6m (£3.4m), Nokia’s venture capital arm Nokia Growth Partners, got in on the act with an investment alongside Samsung.

In a statement on Nokia’s official site, John Gardner, partner at Nokia Growth Partners said “UI technology is a key part of our view of the growing mobile market. We are delighted to participate in this round of funding for Swype, enabling them to bring their cutting-edge technology to more mobile and touch-screen devices.”

Although Nokia doesn’t spell it out directly, it’s clear Nokia is interested in using Swype for text input on its touchscreen devices. When Swype arrives on the Nokia N97, X6 or 5800 Xpress Music, or whatever phones follow, we’ll be sure to let you know. In the meantime, check out this video below of what Swype can do.
