Twitter has released its lists of 2009′s most mentioned terms with the Iran Election, the death of Michael Jackson and the desperate scrabble for Google Wave invites dominating the charts.
The biggest news story of the year for Twitter was the Iran election where the site found itself at the heart of the story. Twitter was even asked by the US government to delay downtime. The hashtag #iranelection tops the list of news references with two further terms (Iran and Tehran) in the top 5.
The only specifically UK referencing news term in the top 10 was #uksnow, following the heavy snow that hit Britain in February 2009. All those Twitpics of snowmen and tweets about ditching work really must have added up.
In the technology top 10, Google Wave hit the top spot, possibly thanks to the initial rampant desire among Twitterers to get hold of an invite when the service first launched. Meanwhile Snow Leopard (no.2) beat Windows 7 (no.4) and the only Twitter client to make the chart was Tweetdeck (in at no.3).
Topping the list of the most tweeted about folk were Michael Jackson (whose death nearly downed the site thanks to the storm of tweets it provoked) and Susan Boyle, whose performance of I Dreamed A Dream became a Youtube hit. Tiger Woods has made a late entry into the chart at no.8 thanks to his recent troubles while Chris Brown is in at no.5 following his highly publicised attack on ex-girlfriend Rihanna.
No UK TV shows made the top 10 TV show list (American Idol topped the chart) while the only British teams to make the sports top 10 were Liverpool (no.10) and Chelsea (no.6) while the Wimbledon Championships came in a no.3.
Do you think the Twitter top 10s paint a true picture of 2009? Or do they just reveal the insular interests of the Twitterati?
