Nintendo has just filed for a trademark on the word “Zii” in Japan, related to video games and electronic devices. Spotted by Siliconera, the file was processed on 30 October 2009. As the site points out, while it could be a simple matter of Nintendo stopping sneaky competitors nabbing typos that sound like the Wii, it’s three years too late to be a bit of due diligence work, surely?

Far more exciting is the possibility that the Nintendo Zii is the inevitable sequel to the staggeringly popular Nintendo Wii. Not only does the later letter suggest it, but Z implies another axis. Could the Nintendo Zii come with added depth perception, Natal style?
We see many a Nintendo related application passing through, but the Nintendo Zii is the most promising in a long while, so we’ll be sure to keep you in the loop if the name springs up again.
