CES iPhone appCES, the world’s biggest gadget fair, goes down in Las Vegas next month, but one company that won’t be attending is Apple. That’s not stopped the organiser, the Consumer Electronics Association, launching its own official CES iPhone app though. But wait, where are the Symbian and Windows Mobile versions?

Apple makes a point of skipping CES, even famously overshadowing the 2007 event by announcing the iPhone at Macworld earlier in the same week. But CES is still giving the iPhone a big endorsement by using the platform to launch its own app. There’s no CES app for Windows Mobile, Symbian or webOS, yet Microsoft, Nokia and Palm are all paying to attend. Google meanwhile, the pioneer of Android, doesn’t have a presence at CES, but some of its executives are talking at sessions during the show.

CES 2010 wishlist: gadgets we’re gagging to see in Las Vegas

The CES iPhone app itself is a free affair with a map, schedule and Twitter integration, that works on iPhone or iPod touch, but it’s the platform of choice, and potential snub to some of the biggest companies at the show, that surprises.

You can download the CES iPhone app now for free if you’re interested, but don’t worry: we’ll be on the show floor throughout bringing you all the coverage right here.

No. Its not a free application (unless for the press attending CES) and right now its only available for press preview. CES writes:

The 2010 CES Mobile Application will be available to the general public on December 16, 2009 for $1.99

Are you sure Lars? I just downloaded it from the App Store and am running it on my iPod touch now, without any preview codes or what not. It’s also free, at least in the UK. Unless they plan to jack up the price tomorrow.

Well, I was amazed to see this announcement by Electricpig, since the mail from CES announcing the free press preview of the CES application, said not to give this information away to the public. It was a two day free preview for the press only, and now its officially a paid application. The price is $1,99, in sterling its probably £1,5 or so.

I don’t think it’s a snub. Symbian and Windows Mobile are both dying platforms, and Windows Mobile has a real possibility of being discontinued in the months ahead. It just wouldn’t make sense to undertake the effort of coding an app for WinMo at this stage.

The 2 hot phone platforms are iPhone and Android, but the unfortunate thing is both of those platforms will not be exhibiting at CES. Rather than coding an app for an older platform that is diminishing in its use, CES should work to attract Android and iPhone to exhibit next year.

As CEO of the company that developed the apps for CES, I want to set the record straight, CEA did not snub anyone. Simply put, we developed to meet the masses – Apple is the most popular and then RIM – bot are avail. We are working hard on Andriod and it will be avail for other trade shows in 2010. Windows, Symbian, Palm, etc are all important but we could only do so much at one time. Enjoy the app!
