Beyerdynamic DT 770 PRO

The Beyerdynamic DT 770 PRO headphones are a bit big to wear out in public but, unless you’re willing to splash out some serious cash, big earphones are generally the way to get the best sound. Are the DT770 PRO headphones worth enduring the slings and arrows of public ridicule for though? We find out in this Beyerdynamic DT 770 PRO review.

Using a closed back design, the Beyerdynamic DT 770 PRO headphones are great at keeping the outside world at bay. Get those ultra-comfortable velour pads clamped around your head and not only will you hardly be able to hear anything but your tunes, people around you won’t be able to hear anything either.

That’s not to say that the DT 770 PRO headphones sound tame though. Anything but. Compared to rivals like the Beyerdynamic DT 860 and AKG K701, the bass plumped out by these drivers is thunderous. These headphones certainly know how to show electro beats and kick drums a good time.

Often, big bass means bad performance on the other side of the sonic spectrum – muffled highs being the most frequent offence. However, the Beyerdynamic DT 770 PRO headphones put in a good show here too, with great treble presence and detail.

That doesn’t mean they’re perfect though. Compare them to the Sennheiser HD650 and the DT770 PROs come across a bit adolescent. Thanks to the scooped-out mids of the DT 770 PRO headphones, they lack the warmth and all-round resolution of some rivals. They have loads of presence to their sound, but not quite as much body.

Whether this should bother you depends on what sort of sound you want and what sort of music you listen to. Classical fan? You can do better than choose the DT 770 PRO pair, but if you’re looking for all-round fun times, they’ll give you a ride to remember. That bass thump is great for gaming too.

Sound like your cup of tea? Make sure you pick up the 80ohm version if you want to plug straight into an MP3 player – the 250ohm version’s hankering after an amp. We’ll catch you later, we’re going to parade around in public wearing the Beyerdynamic DT 770 PROs for a while, see what sort of looks we get.
