Gamers’ Voice, the pressure group created by Labour MP Tom Watson to promote gaming and the UK games industry, is set to expand with a meeting in Parliament.
Watson is holding a real-life meeting of the Facebook-based coalition at the House of Commons today. He says the group’s goal is to fight attacks by the media and politicians on the games industry “because one scene in one game is unpleasant to one journalist”.
The Gamers’ Voice Facebook group has over 15,000 members but Watson intends to increase its reach. He aims to create “the equivalent in gaming of what the Football Supporters’ Association is in football. They’re going to give a platform to ordinary people who are going out there and just love playing games.”
Watson recently spoke about the controversy surrounding Modern Warfare 2 in Parliament and clashed with fellow Labour MP Keith Vaz who has been consistently anti-gaming. He says: “I don’t buy the argument that games ate different to films. As long as we’ve got a rating systems and parents know what they’re purchasing, that’s the key thing.”
