Microsoft‘s been looking into the black screen of death reports that have popped up in wake of a recent Windows update, and is back with its findings: the darkened screens giving Windows users so much trouble? It’s likely down to pesky malware, not Windows itself.
The problem, which has been affecting numerous versions of Windows, sees a black screen popping up after login, with no desktop in reach. Microsoft has concluded that it’s not possible for the recent November security updates to have caused this since they don’t make changes to permissions in the PC’s registry.
Security firm Prevx, which published a solution to the reported problem with users’s PCs, has also issued a statement to the same end, saying that the Microsoft updates can’t have caused it, leaving the likeliest guilty party being malware. In an official blog post, Microsoft points out that “black screen” glitches are associated with malware families such as Daonol.

Of course, that’s little consolation to those who’ve been affected by this new shade of BSOD, but if you’ve got malware munching on your PC, we suggest you get it checked ASAP, using off the shelf virus scanning software.
