Windows-Logo-UPDATE: Microsoft’s findings are in, and it says the latest updates can’t have caused the new BSOD. All the details here.

Windows users! Are you stuck with a blank back screen after a recent update? Microsoft has admitted it’s looking into claims that its latest security fixes are causing the dreaded “black screen of death,” or BSOD, for many of its users.

A statement released today reads: “Microsoft is investigating reports that its latest release of security updates is resulting in system issues for some customers. Once we complete our investigation, we will provide detailed guidance on how to prevent or address these issues.”

The problem seems to be spread right across Microsoft’s range of operating systems, including Windows 7. Users have reported that after logging on, they see a black screen. No desktop, no task-bar, no side-bar and no system tray. Just black. Inky black. Or maybe a solitary explorer window if you’re lucky.

UK security firm Prevx has provided a step-by-step fix to the problem on its blog, which you can view here. Dave Kennerley of Prevx has urged users not to bother googling for an answer, as a search for ‘black screen’ will return over 80million hits. He also reckons a complete re-loading of the Windows OS is unnecessary.

If you haven’t been affected by the BSOD yet then it still might be a good idea to print off Prevx’s solution just in case, especially if you haven’t got access to another machine. Better safe than sorry.
