The Google phone is a “certainty” according to the latest web-based tittle-tattle. An inside source has spilled the beans to Gizmodo, claiming to have seen a working prototype of the device, and it’s not just another Android based phone either – it’s a proper Google branded piece of hardware.
Back in October Andy Rubin, the VP of engineering at Google, denied that there would be a Google handset but the source is adamant that there will be, going as far as to state that prototypes of the Google phone will “flood” the Mountain View campus, Googleplex, in the next few weeks.
The Google phone apparently boasts a large LCD display and, unsurprisingly, will be Android based. But not the Android we’re familiar with, oh no. A brand spanking new version of Android that the source described as the “real Android”.
Which bodes the question, if the Google phone will be running the “real Android”, what exactly is missing from the versions of Android that we currently know? Is Google deliberately sabotaging HTC and Motorola, cleverly lulling them into a false sense of security before unleashing their own iPhone-beating, market-leading handset?
Unlikely, but exciting nevertheless. If the Google phone does materialise and proves to be a success, then Google could become a real player in the hardware market. Maybe even giving Apple a run for its money.

I have an uneasy feeling about this. It’s not the rumours that LG is manufacturing it that concern me, but the possibility that it’ll be a totally integrated Google Voice phone, that at a stretch may even only have a data connection. A nice idea, but one us UKaydians won’t be able to try out! Boo.
