ProForma, a project developed by a Cambridge University PHD student, could mean your ordinary webcam will be able to scan 3D objects, instantly. Read on to have your mind  blown…

Qi Pan, Gerhard Reitmayr and Tom Drummond, PHD students at Cambridge University’s Engineering department, developed the ProForma system which allows you hold an object in your hand and rotate it in front of a webcam to generate a 3D model.

ProForma is particularly clever because it allows models to be generated instantly – as you turn the object, the model begins to be generated on the screen, giving you a clear idea of how to manipulate the object to finish off the computer model.

With ProForma able to work with a standard webcam, the ability to scan objects into your common or garden laptop cannot be far off.
