iTunesApple has opened up iTunes LP and iTunes Extras creation to independent developers meaning anyone can now create interactive digital extras for music or films on the iTunes store. We revealed that Apple was promising to open up iTunes LP creation way back in October.

It was first thought that Apple planned to reserve iTunes LP for major labels but the new templates and development guides mean independent labels and even individual bands and artists can now create iTunes LP content to go with their music on the service.

Apple has added new instructions to the iTunes website to help people wanting to get cracking on their own iTunes LP submissions.

Apple has announced that the process will be automated in the first quarter of 2010 but that until then it is “manual and limited”. To create iTunes LP or iTunes Extras you’ll need to already have an iTunes contract.

As with the iTunes App Store, Apple will review new iTunes LP and iTunes Extras submissions “for appropriateness and technical quality” before they’re added to iTunes.

The templates and guides supplied by Apple will allow anyone with the time, inclination and rights to the music to create an iTunes LP including lyrics, liner notes. photos and videos.

iTunes Extras meanwhile allows content creators to add interactive menus, bonus content and chapter navigation.
