Google search redesign 1

Google is testing a new redesigned search page but it’s only popping up randomly for most people. Want to take a look for yourself? Read to find out how you can take a peek at the new Google Search…

We told you yesterday that Google is currently testing a new search page design but now you can force Google to show you the new design using a bit of Javascript trickery.

Hop over to Blogoscoped, copy the Javascript code from there then go to Google.com (it needs to be .com rather any other local variant). Paste the code into the address bar and press enter, you’ll still be on Google.com but when you search you’ll be shown the new search design with a new menu column on the left-hand-side.

The new menu column allows you to filter your Google search results to choose between all, news, maps and more. If you go through to image results, the new column disappears.

Go and explore the new Google search page design and let us know what you discover.

Works for me on Firefox 3.5 for OS X, but yes, you have to click on Go To Google.com as typing it into the URL simply redirects to Google UK. I think the most important additions are Maps and Images on the left hand side bar – it seems obvious now, but why on earth weren’t they there before? Curiously, a link to the Wonder Wheel also seems to have been removed from the Search Options. Maybe no one was really using it.
