Palm Pre users have suffered data loss after resetting their handsets and trying to restore their information from Palm’s online cloud backup service. Why is there a storm in Palm’s cloud computing system right now?
Palm Pre contacts, calendar items, memos and tasks are meant to automatically synced to Palm’s servers. The theory is that if your Palm Pre is faulty or breaks, you can change it without needing to back up data yo your own computer. In theory.
Palm calls the online data backup “Profile” but it seems the system isn’t working for a large number of users are reporting significant data loss. The issue only appears to have been reported in the US so far.
Palm has released a statement accepting that the issue has occurred: “We are seeing a small number of customers who have experienced issues transferring their Palm Profile information to another Palm webOS device.” It says it’s currently working on a solution.
Palm’s cloud computing problem is similar to Microsoft’s serious Sidekick snafu which resulted in data loss for a large number of users. Palm news site, Palm Central, is advising Palm Pre users to back up their information using Google or Yahoo’s sync services. But do these cases make you trust the cloud less?
