TiVo, the DVR box that preceded Sky+ before vanishing from the UK market, is to make a return to these shores next year – and it’s all courtesy of Virgin Media. Read on for the story behind TiVo’s Lazarus-style return from the dead!
Virgin Media has struck a deal with TiVo that will see the latter’s software and user interface appear on Virgin Media set-top boxes, alongside TiVo’s “broadband to the television capabilities”. The rollout will happen next year.
Virgin Media is clearly looking to up its game to compete with Sky’s Sky+ service, which has become almost synonymous with DVR recording and live pausing technology in the UK. It’s easy to forget that TiVo was actually available before Sky+ – but it was Sky’s tech and marketing that really resonated with the British public, leading to TiVo abandoning the UK.
Will its return be a triumphant one? We’ll have to wait until next year to find out.
