iPod-classic-broken-itunes

Update: Apple has just released iTunes 9.03. Has it fixed your iPod? Tell us now!

Since we reported on Monday about the continuing issues with the iPod Classic syncing with the all new iTunes 9, we’ve been inundated with comments from readers, telling us about Apple-flavoured foibles getting their iPods to connect. We’ve also been in contact with Apple to ask what it’s doing about a problem that seemingly won’t go away.

Following on from our investigation into the iPod Classic’s struggles with iTunes 9, we’ve received a raft of complaints from users who can’t get their Apple jukebox to play nice with the world’s favourite music software.

D Rehmann told us, “I have a 5G iPod Classic (80GB) and have not been able to sync since installing iTunes 9 (9.0.2.25). Actually the problem is that my iPod will not show up as a device in iTunes. My OS is Windows XP and Windows recognizes that my iPod has been connected and I am able to see and browse my iPod using Windows Explorer.”

iTunes 9: iPod classic syncing issues persist

It appears that this is not an isolated case, with Electricpig reader, Doug, saying, “I have a new 160gb iPod classic (6th gen). I’m running Windows XP service pack 3, and using iTunes 9. When I plug the iPod in, it’s recognised by Windows Explorer as an iPod. But iTunes refuses to see it, giving me the error message “The software required for communicating with the iPod is not installed correctly. Please reinstall iTunes to install the iPod’s software.”

Doug goes on to say that even after building his own PC and solving nasty problems with it in the past, he simply cannot work out a fix, even after trying the suggestions on Apple’s website.

Interestingly, some users are reporting that other iPod models are working just dandy with iTunes 9, while their iPod Classic isn’t having any of it. “I have an iPod Classic and iPod Nano. iTunes 9 works fine and syncs with the Nano, but it crashes every time it starts to sync with the Classic,” said S Foreman.

However, some users are telling us that it’s not just the iPod Classic that’s been affected. Adam Neu said, “I’ve got an iPod touch 3rd Gen 32gig and itunes 9 does not recognize it. Phoned Apple and they told be to reinstall all Apple components which i did to no avail.”

Holly Jay Foster told us she’d decided to update to iTunes 9. However, “since then, my iPod refuses to play certain songs, Shuffle does not work properly, and hissing and whirring noises keep coming from the iPod.” She says she has complained to Apple but is yet to receive a response.

When we asked Apple to respond to readers’ complaints about the iPod Classic struggling with iTunes 9, we were told Apple had “declined to comment.” Apple has not responded to our later requests for a statement.

Are you having issues syncing your iPod Classic with your iTunes 9? Tell us and make sure you give us as much detail as possible, including model name and operating system you’re using.

I have a 5G 80GB. I had yet to sync until 9.0.2 was released, but after plugging the iPod in for the first time I received a msg telling me the iPod was corrupted and I needed to restore it. I followed the instructions, but when the syncing started it took two hours to process 120 tracks (out of 8200). I searched fervently across the Apple msg boards and the best solution, I determined, was to try syncing in Disk Mode. That didn’t work. I tried restoring from Disk Mode. Nothing. A friend suggested running the Disk Utility to repair it. Nothing. I erased the disk figuring I would get a clean firmware update on the iPod. It appeared that way and very quickly 1500 tracks were loaded and then iTunes froze, crashed and only 20 tracks survived the debacle. As of today that’s the most progress I’ve had. My iPhone 3G works perfectly fine. This is clearly a serious problem and the solution is not buying a new iPod Classic or “No Comment”. All I’m left feeling is burned. I’m sure I’m not alone.

I have not tried to synch my IPod Classic to v9 yet, and after reading this I will not be doing so in the near future either. I purchased the latest Nano for my wife, and had horrendous trouble synching a playlist which had podcasts in it. After trawling through the forums i did find a workaround, but i am surprised by the no response from Apple. Have they been infiltrated by Microsoft???

Corporate espionage! I’m intrigued to know what’s causing this widespread problem. I have every iPod but the Classic and I haven’t had any problems whatsoever, but the overwhelming number of complaints we’ve received suggest you’re far from alone.

    Hi guys

Cheers for your comments. Rest assured we’re still asking Apple for a comment and as soon as we hear anything from them, you will too.

    Thanks

I paid for an incident report through Apple just to go through everything everyone else has reported. I tried resetting, resynching, restarting iPod service, reinstalling iTunes, and reverting to 8.2.1. I was finallly told to send it in for repair – that it sounds like a “hardware glitch”. Rather disappointing to say the least. I have an iPod Classic 80GB running iTunes on Vista SP2.

I have now come to the conclusion that Apple are aware of this problem, yet are refusing to acknowledge it, since up until I posted a particularly critical and yet constructive comment on the Apple discussions board, my Ipod was working fairly well under the corruption of the iTunes 9 software, however when I attempted to sync it today, a box came up with ‘unknown error’ I would be interested to know if anyone else who has posted similar comments on the Apple discussions board has had this experience afterward.
Also, I have now posted my story to BBC Watchdog, hopefully this will motivate Apple into taking acknowledgment of this problem.

Just got off the phone with Apple trying to figure out why after updating to itunes 9 why my nano wont sync. itunes gives me a message saying the, “folder does not exist and the ipod cannot sync”. The tech at Apple said he’d send me two articles so I could figure out how to reinstall itunes. I run a software co. and told him I don’t have time to read ipod articles and figure out my own solution. I’m on my fourth ipod and have always had problems when a new version of itunes software is introduced. Love the product, don’t like the buggy itunes software and think I’m moving on as a result of the numerous software issues and hours of having to learn how to support my product that is supposed to be entertaining. I recommend to all not to be early adaptors of ipod software updates. Apple is starting to remind me of Microsoft.

  • Doug

I know what you mean – some acknowledgement from Apple would be good.

However, I used software called Media Monkey to put music onto my iPod, because iTunes wouldn’t work. And Media Monkey doesn’t connect to the Apple Store. Which means not buying from the Apple Store.

So, surely it’s in Apple’s interests to fix this problem.

I, too, am having problems after downloading itunes 9. I have a Windows XP OS and my iPod is a Classic 80GB. I did a web surch and have tried almost everything. I have unistalled everthing Apple/iPod/iTune from my computer. I Have reset my Pod. I tried downloading an earlier version of iTunes but then it said that my library could’nt be read. I reinstalled iTunes 9 and each time I have done this my computer responds differently. If i Tunes is off, then my computer will recognize the iPod. The minute I turn on iTunes the iPod ejects and neither the computer or iTunes “sees” it. The last message is saying the USB driver files are missing. So I Uninstalled nd reinstalled iTunes and still nothing. Maybe we should get someone to start a class action lawsuit with these guys. Too many people are complaining their devices don’t work anymore ang they can’t even tell us how to fix them.

I am so glad i am not the only one to be having this problem. I have the ipod classic 120gb and the first thing i noticed was that it wont sync with the new itunes software, nor was it being recognised onto the itune software. So i checked if my computer had picked up the device and again it wasnt showing. So i read up on the trouble shoot page, it advised me to reformat or reset the whole ipod by holding down menu and the middle button until i saw the apple logo. Ok, so i did that and then i was told it needed to download the recovery thing from itune before i had to restore the ipod back to the factory settings. Once all that was done, my itune finally recognised my ipod but there was a new problem. This time it was telling it cant find the disk?? GRRR! I decided to reformat my ipod over and over again to see if that issue would go away and after about 5 tries, i decided to uninstall itune 9 and install it again to see if that would solve it. Yep, you guessed it….NOPE the problem is still there….it would only partly sync the ipod and then the same problem starts again with the missing disk! My sister also has the same problem but she has the old style nano ipod… HELP!

I have bought my girl friend a new Ipod Nano for Christmas 2009, this one is the same slim line style that has been around for over a year now. This Ipod has a camera and FM also. I have an Ipod Nano that is a year older without the camera and FM radio. Her new Nano and my older Nano seem to work fine with Itunes v 9.02.25 on my computer running Windows XP. Her computer is a year old Compaq running Windows Vista, which also has Itunes v 9.02.25 installed. Itunes seems to find my Ipod on her computer running Vista, but does not find her new Ipod. When Itunes is not installed, the Ipod is found in Vista Device Manager, but disappears from there when Itunes is installed. I have tried resetting the new Ipod without success. Both Ipods seem to work fine with Itunes v 9.02.25 on a Windows XP computer, but the new Ipod is not working with this version of Itunes on a computer running Vista. Doing some research on the Internet seems to reveal a lot of people with the same problem, perhaps Vista 64 bit incompatibility with Itunes ? There are better things to do on Christmas Day than sort out Ipod technical issues… The error messages showing were “An Ipod has been detected but it could not be identified properly. Please disconnect and reconnect the Ipod, then try again” Obviously tried without success.
Also this message “The software required for communicating with Ipods and mobile phones was not installed correctly. Do you want Itunes to try to repair this for you ?” This was tried, and Itunes uninstalled and re-installed a few times without success. Typing these messages into Google seems to reveal a lot of people having the same problem, and it is difficult to know what is the correct solution. If there is a good solution I will try to post it here…

I-pod classicwas my wifes Xmas present. After several purchases (and successful Syncing)it refused to sync last purchases. It said go to DEVICES to reset, but DEVICES has disappeared from I-tunes menu.
All it says is ”ALAN’S I- Pod cannot be synced. The required folder cannot be found.Unknown error occured (-124).

  • Alan Thomas

After reading all the other problems i think it is probably best to return I-pod and find something more reliable.Does anybody have any IDEAS.

  • http://facebook'ipodcomplaints' Holly Jay Foster

    RE Alan Thomas
If you have not returned your I-Pod, please keep a record of every warranty etc that came with it. Secondly, plug the Ipod in, go to Control Panel, click Add Hardware and re-set the Ipod as a device. Alternatively, gather as much evidence as possible and contact BBC Watchdog, as we need more people to join the campaign against Apple, I myself have contacted Watchdog.
This is a common occurence among new iPods, and is due to the software.
Finally, if you can uninstall Itunes, (save your library) and visit this site: http://www.technobuzz.net/download-itunes-8/ then follow the links to the download. The only problem with this download is that because it is an American version, it will not allow access to the iTunes store. Personally I think it is better not to have the store, and have a working iPod, but each to their own. Hope this helps!

I have a 30 GB Ipod (Black) Classic, I’m using a MAC PowerBook G4 and iTunes 9, I can see my device on the desktop, and cannot sync the device with iTunes. I also have a pink Nano, and I haven’t noticed the issue (yet). I have a ton of music on this machine/device and I hate that I am possibly going to lose it. Had I known that there were sync issues, I would have used my PC (has iTunes version 8) and purchased and loaded the music from that library onto my device. It’s truly unfortunate that our profiles aren’t roaming profiles that can be authenticated by login and tracked through IP to help cut back on piracy issues.

It’s really a pain in the butt, if you do not have more than one machine, because now I have to burn my library onto disks or put onto external hard drive, then load disk into old library that’s on my PC, then sync it to my iPOD and that stinks.

I really hope they create a fix and soon, because that’s a pain and way too much to be going through, and I absolutely refuse to purchase ANOTHER product because of a software issue… Fix it, or send everyone replacements, like everyone else, we’ve paid money for the music and the hardware, so we should have the right to use it as it was intended.

  • Jay

I am trying to sync music to my 30gb classic ipod.
Though I am logged on as an administrator it keeps giving me the message … not enough permission… My Ipod will not sync. I think I have the latest Itune.

I’m so glad I’m not the only one! Yesterday I upgraded to V9 and since then I’ve had nothing but problems with my second gen iPod Nano – exactly the same as most of you – first it won’t download particular songs, then wouldn’t sync at all, then told me it was corrupt and needed restoring, then that it couldn’t be restored. Despite everything we tried no luck. I then decided to try a newer iPod shuffle and have had exactly the same thing happen. I had decided that my iPod was obviously too old to work with the new software and I needed to buy a new one but now I realise it’s not that and won’t be rushing off to buy a new one!

  • Christopher Nut

Finally found a solution to this after a few days of pain.

    1. Copy the ‘music’ folder from your ipod (it’s hidden in Ipod Control) to PC
    2. Format the Ipod using Windows disk manager
    3. Install Itunes V8 ( google Oldapps Itunes for download)
    4. Connect Ipod to PC, hold middle and menu to set to recovery.
    5. Itunes should then recognise Ipod and prompt you to restore.
    6. Restore Ipod
    7. Copy ‘Music’ folder to Itunes
    8. Sync Ipod to get your music back on your ipod.

    Thanks all!

Just upgraded to Itunes version 9.2 and now I don't have any sound whatsoever. Sound is working fine on Windows MediaPlayer. How do I rectify this problem?

  • http://facebook'ipodcomplaints' Holly Jay Foster

FOR EVERYONE WHO WISHES TO RESTORE THEIR IPOD AND REINSTALL ITUNES 8. THIS SOFTWARE IS AVAILABLE FROM TECHNOBUZZ.NET AND IT WORKS! The only downside is that because it is an American version, it will not allow access to the UK iTunes Store, but surely it’s better to have a working IPOD than paying more money to Apple to purchase songs?
