Google has started testing a new search interface, making it available to random users. Have you been lucky enough to see Google’s new window on the world?
Google’s new search layout, which appears to be being tested on users at random, makes lays out search results in a cleaner, clearer way and brings to mind Google Wave’s UI.
Screenshots of the Google search redesign, snaffled up by the good folks at Gizmodo, reveal one big addition – a new column on the left hand side.
The new column allows you to filter your Google search results to choose between all results, news, maps and “more” (presumably images and other content). It also offers up similar search queries you might want to try.
The new Google search layout also brings the option to filter your results by time, pointing towards a more real-time approach from the search giant. You can choose to see “recent results”, results from the past hour, 24 hours, week, year or a custom range.
Finally, the new Google search column includes and option to “show search tools”. Unfortunately, we can’t actually see what that menu contains so it remains a tantalising mystery.
Google hasn’t given any indication as to when or even if it will launch the redesigned search page. But it could be planning to roll out the new design in tandem with its faster search algorithm Google Caffeine.
The new Google search design’s real-time focus links in well with its recent deals with Facebook and Twitter. If you get lucky and find yourself using Google’s new version, take a snap shot and send it our way.
