While Avatar: The Game is a spin off from the flick, it’s actually a prequel. You’re still battling the 12 foot high Na’vi for resources to save Earth, but if we’re bring honest, the reason we want to love this game is its 3D skills.
Because this isn’t 3D like Channel 4 3D week. No sirree. For a kick off, you’re going to need a proper, stereoscopic 3D TV to play the three dimensional parts of Avatar: The Game. That means stumping up thousands for either the JVC effort we used when it hits the UK next year, or opting for the Sony 3D TV instead. If you were planning on getting Sky 3D though, it’s not such a hardship.
Playing Avatar: The Game in 3D was, unsurprisingly, every bit as slick trying out Gran Turismo in 3D on Sony’s 3D telly back at IFA. The depth and colours were absolutely stunning: the world in which you play is full of vivid greens and blues. Playing as Abel Ryder, who works for the Resources Development Administration, you get to infiltrate the native Na’vi and try to get hold of the alien planet’s resources.
If we’re honest though, the story is almost secondary to the 3D sections of Avatar: The Game. It’s so visually arresting, with foliage almost within touching distance and missiles whizzing past your head as you battle through the jungle.
The attention to detail is ace, with James Cameron working on a whole alternate universe to explore, as well as designing the smallest of vehicles. Avatar: The Game’s 3D segments will leave you breathless, with huge creatures rearing up and diving down your throat and even your cohorts taking on a more life like look.
We’ll be bringing you a full review of Avatar: The Game soon. But while you wait you might want to figure out how you’re going to save for the 3D TV to play the best bits on.
