Voice over IP service Fring has just brought video calls to a bunch of Nokia phones, allowing “Fringsters” to conduct free live chat with each other, or with their Skype contacts, via their phone’s 3G or Wi-Fi connection.
The Fring update – which is the first video chat via IP service ever – is currently available to anyone with a Nokia X6, Nokia N97 Mini, Nokia N97, Nokia 5800 XpressMusic, Nokia N95 8GB and Nokia N95. It comes embedded in the regular Fring app, which already allows free VoIP calls to Fring, Skype and GTalk users.
Fring has yet to announce plans to bring the Skype-friend video chat service to phones other than the Nokia handsets listed above, but as the existing VoIP app is available for other Symbian S60 phones, as well as iPhone, Android, Windows Mobile, J2ME and Linux devices, video chat could well be expanding its base in the coming months.
