iPhoneAnother iPhone worm has surfaced to wreak havoc on jailbroken handsets, conning folk into forking over their bank details. We’ve got the solution to prevent infection right here, along with all the details.

It’s only affected a small number of users in the Netherlands so far, but the Duh worm, which can self-replicate over Wi-Fi networks, is much more malicious than the first, rickrolling abuse of the cracked iPhone OS. Anyone using a jailbroken iPhone to bank with the Dutch ING Direct is taken to a fake log-in page, where their details are promptly pilfered.

New iPhone worm swipes personal details

The new iPhone worm takes advantage of the same vulnerability as the last one, meaning that anyone who hasn’t changed their jailbroken iPhone’s root password is at risk. The instructions to rectify this are here, and while this particular worm isn’t a risk in the UK, this is unlikely the last we’ll see of it, so it’s well worth securing yourself now.

Like Ikee worm, this new kind of malware affects only jail broken iPhones which have SSH installed and have not changed the default password.

Once the worm is executed, it connects to a control-center located in Lithuania and its main malicious action is to try to steal information from the mobile device to report to the hacker center).
Fortunately the worm is not widespread but users owning mobile devices, like iPhones should be very careful of this new threat.

Where you can, try and avoid running a “jail breaking” process on your mobile device. Jail breaking tools generally install a software program called OpenSSH, which allows you to control your device remotely and therefore can be controlled by third-parties as well as yourself, thus allowing for vulnerability and control of your device.

In order to avoid such problems, it is advisable to avoid installations of applications not approved by Apple.
