Update: Apple has just released iTunes 9.03. Has it fixed your iPod? Tell us now!

When iTunes 9 slipped out of Cupertino in September, it led to a raft of complaints from iPod Classic owners unable to sync their Apple jukebox with the new music software. And two months on, problems appear to be persisting, with readers telling us iTunes 9 still isn’t playing nice with their iPods.

Customers’ complaints about iTunes 9 range from failure to sync with the iPod Classic, to having to spend hours searching through folders for corrupt files causing the iPod to fail.

Barbara, an Electricpig reader, told us her 80GB iPod Classic struggled with iTunes 9. “The recent update did nothing for me,” she said. “I went to an Apple service centre and they denied the problem, even though I mentioned other users on the internet.”

iTunes 9 kills iPod Classic

While the cases do appear limited, Apple’s discussion boards are buzzing with talk about iTunes 9 problems with the iPod Classic in particular.

Users there say their iPod Classics have simply stopped working after installing iTunes 9. Complaints have continued well into November, two months after Steve Jobs took to the stage to introduce iTunes 9. Comments on the Apple discussion page say Cupertino is alive to the problem, although it seems there’s no update planned for iTunes in the near future.

The problems seem varied, from complete failure to sync to corrupt files. One reader, Jacob Y, got in touch to tell us his iPod Classic is now working, but that it took hours of rummaging around in his PC’s files to solve the problem.

“There is something with the 9 software that is either corrupting the files on the ipod or leaving scattered or corrupted files on the install folders,” he claimed.

Another reader, Ceri Periam, told us that his 3rd generation iPod nano was also experiencing syncing issues with iTunes 9, suggesting the problem isn’t strictly limited to the old-school iPod Classic either.

When asked Apple for its opinion on your syncing issues, but received the following statement: “Apple declined to comment.”

Has your iPod Classic stopped working? Are you struggling to sync with iTunes 9, or have you found a fix of your own? Tell us and we’ll share your tips, or take complaints directly to Apple. Make sure you give us the model of iPod, which generation it is and the exact version of iTunes you’re using.

I have the same problem with my Daughter’s new and biggest Christmas present. The Ipod does not appear in Itunes 9.02 for syncing. Is there any expected date this will be fixed.

    • http://www.gravatar.com James Holland

Not yet Don, the latest from Apple is that they’re aware of it and “investigating”

Macbook Pro, iTunes 9.0.2. My iPod classic 160GB is not recognised. Am spending hours trying to find a fix for this situation and it is immensely frustrating, as I need to put some voice audio on my iPod for work. Have just dug out a old iPod mini 4GB, which seems to work ok – however Apple need to find a fix for this problem or they will plainly lose a lot of goodwill.

all is well with itunes, latest software update and restore has restored full functionality to my ipod classic 120Gb

I bought a 160 gh ipod a few days ago and I had to delete itunes 8 in order to install itunes 9. It took me the entire day to download and install itunes 9 but it does not open because some files seem to be missing. Now, I do not have itunes 8 and my itunes 9 won’t open. Also, the computer slows down or interner explored gets disconnected whenever I click open my ipod. So far, I have not been able to use my ipod and I am thinking of returning it to the apple store.

I had a new nano bouhgt for me for xmas, requires iTunes 9 to work at all so was forced to download it. We have a total of 5 ipods in our house, 2 Shuffles for the gym, an old 5th gen white one, an 80gb Classic and the new nano. After downloading 9 the shuffles and the white one still sync but the classic is a no go which is stupid as it was the main unit we used for household music ! Unlike some we can still listen to the music already on the unit but cannot update with any new tracks. Despite following the advice on their trouble shooting site no improvement and I am worried about keep repeating installs incase I end up frying the Classic as appears to have happened to others. Do Apple expect us to replace everyone of our units each time they “upgrade” itunes, bloody disgrace

  • Emilie

I have a 6th gen ipod classic and after re-formatting it to change from PC to mac it will now not sync and gets stuck on random songs. Arghhh. I feel lost without music and am forced to listen to the crazy ramblings of retarded people on the bus instead of my music. Whilst this is not entirely apple’s fault, I do blame them…alot.

  • kathy

Ipod Classic – 160gb — stopped syncing or it starts syncing but only gives me a few songs. I have done alot of research trying to fix the problem, nothing worked. I reinstalled Itunes, thinking that was the problem — and lost everything I had d/l from Itunes since the end of September. So not only do I have a classic not working BUT I also have ALOT of missing music. Beyond frustrated.

nice new shiny mac, 7 years of ipod use and 120gb classic killed by the very stability i moved off windows for. less than impressed.

itunes upgrade killed the ipod and it was not recognised in itunes or on desktop – found it in disk utility

After 16 plus hours of fiddling needed to do the following:-

back up itunes library (300 gigs) to external hard drive (s) (very cautious)
    remove all itunes 9.0.2
remove all library /itunes files (copy to external drive for easy restore)
move itunes 9 to trash (best location for it) and empty.
restart computer whilst also reseting ipod (menu and centre button) offline.
put ipod into disk mode (after reset when apple sign comes up press centre button and pause play)
download itunes 8 and install (had my externals turned off)
hopefully itunes 8 should show ipod although i had to run through disk utility and verify repair drive before this would happen.
after recognised in itunes had to restore.
itunes 8 working fine but then (stupidly) decided to reinstall 9.0.2 so try and avoid this if you do not need functionality.
i can load to ipod now but very slow on 9.0.2. also now having the streaming problem for video.

come back mr gates all is forgiven (almost).

i am in egypt so no support facility even though ipod is less than 1 year old (last one was stolen from the JW marriott in Cairo). Good news is that this is Apple system error. Bad news is this is apple system error and i have heard horror stories of pods just out of warranty and the stores suggesting a new one is bought. is there any coincidence with this update and the release of the new shiny flash pods later on in the month of september??

  • Wellyboots

I have a 160gb Ipod classic gen 5/6 downloaded version 9.2 of itunes last night and now my pc does not recognise my ipod, my ipod will only display the apple logo/red ring of death and I cant force the disk mode AAAAAAAAAAARRRRRRRRRRRRGGGGGGGGGGHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    • iNoch

Mac OS X 10.6.2 Snow Leopard; 160Gb Ipod Classic synced well with iTunes 9.01, but with version 9.02 problems started: iTunes didn’t recognize my iPod anymore. The iPod did occur on the desktop, though. Followed advice to move 9.02 to desktop, reinstall 9.01 through Time Machine and yes it works fine again. Second part of advice was to upgrade firmware of iPod, but that was not possible: there is no update to 1.1.2 yet. So up until now I didn’t move 9.02 back to my programs folder…

    • Stephen Wyles

I had a very similar problem. I came across this post early on and it did not have an answer or help me with my situation – so, when I got my situation fixed, I thought I would come back and give my solution to see if it would help.

Reset ipod (toggle hold then hold down menu and select buttons until apple appears on screen)

Remove iTunes 9 (drag to trash)

download iTunes 8 (easy to find with a google search)

Install itunes 8, after installation when you open iTunes it will tell you the library was created with a new version… so what! restart iTunes while holding down the option key. tell it to create a NEW library- name it what ever your not going to use it.

plug in the iPod… i got an error saying the firmware on ipod was not the same as itunes and to install additional ipod support from OSx disk… DO IT! (additional software – ipod support)

      restart mac

open itunes plug in ipod and it should recognize it…. now it should tell you that your ipod has a firm ware update… do it! Once that is finished and has rebooted your ipod and you can see it again in the itunes menu- update itunes back to version 9.

Done! Simply point your itunes music folder back to where all your tunes are located and import the entire thing (my itunes folder is about 40gb and this took only 5 minutes)

resync music to your ipod and you are done. and you are on the newest version of itunes with your classic ipod!

I can verify that the downgrade to 8.2.1 followed by an “upgrade” to 9.0.3 again recognizes my ipod. After the 8.2.1 installation was complete, I option-opened 8.2.1, chose to create a new (trashable) library and was prompted whether to transfer purchased music or erase.

I chose transfer and let it complete the synch, ejected the ipod and quit. I was not prompted to upgrade my ipod firmware.

Next I option-opened 9.0.3 after removing it from the trash, chose my old library and now I seem to be synching normally.

Preferences appear to have been reset, but all playlists, etc are still there. I overwrote 8.2.1 with 9.0.3 in my applications folder after I quit, and it still shows and synchs the ipod.

80 GB iPod Classic not recognized by iTunes 9.02–tried Restart, Reinstall , Toggle Hold, Toggle USB, Toggle On/Off, Update , etc. Finder recognizes iPod well, and reveals stored files in iPod “desktop” (e.g. images, mass storage data, memos, etc.), but not iPod Music Library. Running Snow Leopard, with iTunes 9.02 app. from iTunes website.
Will iTunes 7 or 8 run with Snow Leopard?

  • Amy

I have an iPod Classic and recently I updated iTunes to iTunes 9. Now I cannot sync my iPod. It is very frustrating how after hours of resetting, restarting and reinstalling, my iPod has yet to connect to my computer.

Apple has just released iTunes 9.0.3. Does it fix your iPod? Tell us now.

  • Michael

Have a 30GB that has worked great for years. I got a new laptop and loaded 9.02 and reloaded all my music into itunes. I synced and it worked perfectly. I loaded some more cds and bought some music and tried to sync again. Absolutely no luck. I followed all Apple solutions and nothing made a difference. I loaded 9.03 thinking this would take care. It did not. itunes will not see my ipod. Any new ideas?

  • Hugo L

Yeah, after installing iTunes 9.0.3, account authorization failed so that I could not play DRM protected music and videos inside iTunes, plus I could not copy the protected music to my iPod Mini (second generation) anymore. Went back to iTunes 9.0.2 and everything is fine now. Thank god for Time Machine backup!

  • Daneta Clark

My 160 gb ipod classic will no longer sync with itunes since uploading the latest version 9.0.3. Running a complete file scan has turned up nothing, resetting ipod doesn’t help either.

  • jo Hamilton

My 2 2nd gen. shuffles will not now synch more than one song on each – has anyone any ideas? so frustrated!!!

  • C Richards

No change for me when using 9.0.3 – can still only sync around 20 Gb at most on my Classic 120 Gb, symptoms the same as other users posting on the Apple discussion boards. Tried Apple tech Support yet again, but the agent claimed to know nothing about problems caused by iTunes 9 and suggested it was probably a hardware fault. Out of warranty (by about 3 months) and so I’m off to try taking it back to the retailer to complain, and if no joy, then it’s a Cowon I suppose.

  • David

Same thing here – can’t sync my perfectly good 160GB Class with 9.0.3. Every other iPod in the house syncs up fine. Trying to re-install prior versions of iTunes from oldapps.com. Love my iPod. Hate Apple.

  • Seth

i recently figured out a fix for this, altho its not guaranteed to work. you have to enter disk mode on your ipod(easy to figure out how if you google) then you need to make it show up on “my computer” then right click and format it afterwards or you can do this before, completely uninstall itunes 9 and download 8.2 or earlier and voila your ipod SHOULD work.(obviously you’ll have to run the restore option but with 8.2 or earlier it wont mess up or make the ipod freeze/lockup or anything) as i said this worked for me but i cant guarantee it as a solution for everyone… makes me think apple did this on purpose to hit people whos ipods were out of warranty to make them buy new ones.

  • Jason

Waiting for another “Fix.” 9.03 didn’t change anything. I have a 5th generation 30GB Ipod. My Apple won’t recognize the IPOD at all. Tried everything, the 5 R’s, reinstall of Itunes 8. Spent the whole weekend working on this and have determined that I need Apple to step up. My hands are tied. I do wonder if there was a way to reset the IPOD to factory settings without hooking it up to a computer. My Ipod still works, I just can’t modify the playlists or use the disk mode function anymore. Disk mode was important to me because I was using that to transfer files to and from my work/home computers. Bummed. I was going to give this to my child and upgrade to an Touch. Not sure if I should invest.

  • jason

You’d think that apple would have a few Ipods around the office and would have checked on their updates. If I’d known, I would have never updated.

  • ABR

I had some success in getting a sync to complete by unchecking the sync option for podcasts, hitting “apply”, then checking it back on and doing so again. This works in my case where the iPod starts to sync, then shows on its screen that it is done, but iTunes is just hung saying it is syncing.

  • Ifyousaygo

Crap. My son’s Ipod Classic just crashed after he updated to Itunes 9. He’s only had the Classic for a month (Christmas present). What do we do? Is Itunes 9.0.3 supposed to be the fix? Will Apple replace his Ipod? Sorry if I sound dumb… this isn’t my area of expertise… but I’m MAJORLY frustrated.

  • Steve

Having the same problem here with my 80 GB ipod classic.. It syncs up to a certain point and gets stuck on a song after a few hundred songs. I took it to the local Apple store and they didn’t help me at all. They took my ipod to the back and restored it on their Mac computer and gave it back to me and told me to try it again at my house. Still the same problem. He said it could be the hardware in my ipod and I might have to get a new one. BS. It seems to me that Apple wants everyone to convert to the touch Ipod.

    • Marcus

I’m having the self same problem, and getting the same response from the Apple store too. Have you got any further?
I’ve got an appointment booked at the Genius bar today, I think its gonna be an ironic experience!!!

  • Tor Berthelsen

Oblivious to the issues with Itunes 9.0.3 I went ahead and upgraded. Now my 160GB Classic disconnects after a minute of syncing leaving only a few songs on the ipod. I’ve had to restore it a couple of times as well. Due to the complete corruption of some ipods I’ve discarded Itunes altogether and made the switch to Linux and syncing with gtkpod. Now I can drag and drop albums onto the unit without any problems (the ability to edit ID3 tags is also a nice touch).

  • jim jester

160gb classic. won’t sync properly with winamp, itunes or media monkey. have been able to sync music in 1000 song chunks. but eventually the ipod gets bricked and i need to restore and start again. seams to me that incompatible or corrupt mp3s cause the crash. in a 20000+ collection its going to be a bitch to find them all. mega lame

  • Vj knievil

160 gb classic won’t sync, 60gb video will sync. This needs sorting out.

  • http://www.electricpig.co.uk Steve

Does anyone have a fix for the iPod Classic 80 GB or 160 GB to work properly with the iTunes 9.03, this is very frustrating. Help !!!!

  • TC

Cant use my ipod classic or shuffle and my wifes nano doesnt work anymore on itunes 9. Upgrade didnt help at all. Sounds like a deliberate ‘fault’ to me.

  • Jerry

I’ve had this same problem starting yesterday, and completedly uninstalled all Apple components and installed 9.0.3 and still same problem. Their so-called fix didn’t work. I have an 80 gig classic. I wouldn’t get another Apple product if my life depended on it. They’re too slow to respond to customer issues.

  • Paula

I have a brand new Ipod Classic 160GB running Windows XP, service pac 2., Itunes 9.0.3. My Ipod will not sync. Starts, then freezes quickly into the process, freezes my computer, so I have to shut it down in order to be able to do anything. I had an older Ipod classic when this started. Thought maybe it was just dead, so bought a new one. I am EXTREMELY FRUSTRATED and if I don’t find a fix soon, will return it and be done with Itunes. I have spent HOURS online researching. Tried using the Mac users suggestion of going back to older version of itunes, but never could get it to read library. I’m not understanding all the directions. My PC does not have an options button, so tried ALT button. Did not work.

  • Tyler Marshall

I just had this problem i had some files saved onto the physical ipod itself and i decided to delete those and now my ipod wont sync at all and it gets stuck on “verifying ipod”. I have the 6th generation 80gb ipod classic. This has only been a problem until now, and i dont know why. i was thinking maybe deleting those files did something, but it sounds more like a bad coincidence or maybe that is what set off the whole problem. i dont want to backup all of my music, i have over 9000 songs and that would take way too long to back up and re upload to another version of itunes. is there anyway that could go around this issue? I use my ipod every day during school study hall and its so hard to get anything done with everyone else’s noise. One other problem i have been starting to get was random songs wouldnt play and sometimes they would skip the song or just freeze, and if i skipped to a part in the song the ipod would just “kill” itself and reset.. i dont know if that is just it getting old or the itunes update, please help!!

  • Janice Stephenson

Wish I had read these comments BEFORE I synched my ipod classic 80gb as it is no longer recognised by either my laptopt or Itunes. Agree that the so called support is as much use as a chocolate fire guard. Ipod works fine but can’t manage it so no way to update contents. Apple should accept responsibility and produce a fix.

  • Ella

Have long been a loyal Apple supporter, but this has left me beyond ticked off..like other posters..unfortunately I discovered this was an issue too late. I have both a mac and a pc, but my 80gb ipod was formatted for mac only. My mac is still running an older version of itunes as I hadn’t got around to upgrading it. Unfortunately I had added itunes 9 to my pc.

I decided to restore and reformat my ipod on the pc, so that I would be able to sync with both computers……what a clusterf**k…the ipod reformatted and then went downhill from there…itunes on the pc is saying that the ipod is corrupted, but restoring again only brings back to the message that it is corrupt again. It won’t eject, I can’t access the disc mode and it makes my whole computer hang…after wasting 5 hours of my life trying to work out what the problem was with the pc sync…I finally plugged it into the mac and it was recognised by the older version of itune without issue and the disc was accessible also…I realised then that I may have been looking in the wrong places and it was itunes.

If this has left my ipod unusable on the pc or with permanent corruption issues….Mr Jobs is going to have me knocking on his door…ps..did I mention that I wasted hours thinking it was other issues, not to mention the frustration level!!

  • JS

I’m having the same old problems as everyone else. I was on a long car trip, wanted to listen to a particular song on my 80GB classic, but it wouldn’t play it, and instead skipped to whatever was “next” in its playlist. Tried it a few times, it wouldn’t work, so I figured it was a file error or something. When I got home I tried re-syncing it with itunes, but that just turned into a mess because now it gets pinwheeled after a few thousand songs, and even after doing multiple restores and “clean slates”, it still takes 10-20 minutes per song to sync. That’s completely unacceptable with a 9000+ song playlist.

  • AM

Plugged my Classic 80GB into my docking station to play some tunes and was quite surprised to find my entire music library missing. I can see by the disk storage space that it still exists, but now shows under other category and can’t access. Plugged it into iTunes and I’ve tried resetting multiple times with no luck. Very frustrating!

installed itunes 9 as it TOLD me to do so, since then ipod classic 160GB WONT sync !! at first it told me ‘verifying ipod’ and di this for AGES until i had to force quit it. from then whenever i connect my ipod it SAYS it is syncing but it is NOT. then again i have to force quit, and NOTHING on my ipod has changed. went to to my local apple store, man was very helpful but basically said that as i have a PC not a mac and it is a desktop he cant give me any advice :S

I’m in a classroom setting with 9 iPod Classics. iTunes 9.03.15 has caused two of them to resist synching and in fact, while they display as devices on my PC, they do not even register in the iTunes window. Any ideas? I am desparate to work with my students.

  • NS

Same problem here. Been working fine for as long as I can remember. Plugged it in yesterday, now songs sync at approximately one every five minutes. How am I supposed to sync a 10,000 song library like this? Wait 34 days?

  • metalhead2459

i got a 160gb classic back in december and it worked fine until the past couple months. itunes keeps saying that my ipod cannot be read and i have to keep restoring it. and that really pisses me off seeing that it takes a good 4 hours or so to put my 26,000 songs back on it about twice a week thanks to this problem. but i remember reading somewhere online that apple may be “phasing out” the classics very soon and just keeping the touches. theres more of a market for the touches with all the apps and the touch screen. if you think about it, it makes sense that apple would cause these problems as a beginning stage to phasing out the classics, and of course they’re going to deny any of these problems cause there would be alot of pissed off people if this was whats really happening. i wouldnt mind so much if they came out with a large enough touch that was either 160gb or maybe a 250gb touch. but the price for that capacity flash memory would make the touch so expensive that no one would want to spend the money on it.

I’ve had a 120GB iPod Classic for just over a year and i’ve never had any problems with it…until now.

When I connected my iPod to iTunes to put some new music on, it crashed and said that I had to restore my iPod, which I did (albeit slightly heartbroken!)

Then it proceeded to get worse…Now when I try to sync all of my music back on to my iPod, it lets me transfer just under 10GB and then both my iPod and computer crash and won’t let me go any further.

I’m using iTunes9 and Windows XP if thats any help. I have tried to restore my iPod again in the hope that it might fix itself but no such luck!

Any help would be much appreciated. Thank you.

I too have a classic. Utter nightmare since installing iTunes 9. Every piece of music disappeared from the iTunes programme & also from the folders in Music on my PC.
No Playlists, no previous library, no purchased list-absolutely all my classics had vanished.
Luckily I had backed up iTunes folder to hard drive, so was eventually able to get it back-but everything duplicated which was a pain. Still no playlists or purchased lists.
When trying to sync my iPod it had to install drivers again, then it said I could not sync as I had another library on my iPod. Had to erase and resync. It seems to have worked, but surely this should not happen-I am a pensioner and not as sharp as the youngsters at computer problems. I presume that downloads from Apple should be OK, but not this time.

I have an old ipod classic (3G without the click wheel) that doesn't even turn on when I connect it to the computer [with iTunes 9]

  • DavidPescado

I bought a used 80GB iPod Classic 5th Generation on eBay from a very well known and trusted seller that is an electronics auctioning company located in Texas. The iPod worked just fine at first, and then when I tried to sync it to my new iMac with OSX 6.1 and iTunes 9.1.3 (whatever the newest version is), the problems began to appear. It was taking over an HOUR to upload 1 single gigabyte of music to my iPod. I then attempted to just pull the iPod without ejecting the iPod from the computer. At this point, my iPod took several minutes to turn on, only to have NONE of the music I had just put on it. When I tried to Sync it again, I was told the iPod was “corrupt” and I had to Restore it. So I hit the Restore button, only to have my iPod try to Restore itself for hours on end. I once again took it off the USB without ejecting it. I then tried to sync it with our old Windows XP with a slightly older version of iTunes and it Restored at lightning speed compared to the other, but I was still having issues, so thinking I had an iPod with some kind of bug, I returned it to the auction company to be analyzed and replaced, which they did. Now on my second run with the same iPod, I plugged it into the Mac and it synced all 3000 of my songs and videos within one hour. It then had the “OK to Disconnect” message at the top of my iTunes and the iPod said the same thing. Once I disconnected however, I HAD NOTHING ON THE IPOD! And the “corrupt” message appeared once again when I plugged it in, leading to an endless Restore ONCE AGAIN. I accidentally updated the iTunes on my Windows, so the same issue with Syncing happened when I plugged it in. There is no way that both of these iPods worked perfect before I synced them and then had the same exact issue right after by coincidence. This is some real bullsh*t if you ask me.

  • Gavin1965

Yes, Itunes 9.0.1.2 and an IPOD Classic 120gb. Cannot synch, it hangs and you can't edit genres or other metadata globally from drop downs. There is no way this can have been tested. I would love to know who the IT services partner was who developed this. Its very poor.

  • Pandaxlove

i have a 120 gb ipod classic, ive had it for a year now and it works perfectly until i updated my itunes to itunes 9. it wont sync, after trying and failing for 2 days i tried it again and it only synced 1/4 of my songs, all my photos, no movies and tv shows. it keeps saying that my ipod has corrupted files, i have restored my ipod several times now and it still wont sync properly.

  • Annoyed

just downloaded itunes 9.2 now when I try to synchronise my ipod classic itunes freezes.
nothing I do can fix it. Help

  • Tensen01

iPod Classic 5th Gen 30gig. As soon as I plug it in iTunes freezes and it starts back up as soon as I unplug it. I'm very upset, this iPod has served me for years without a problem and now I can't even charge it and all my music got erased so I can't even just plug it into my iPod compatible stereo.
