Quanta Android smartbook: hands-on photos!

We’ve seen Android smart-book prototypes before, but this number from Quanta knocked us over when we spied it this morning at a Qualcomm showcase. It’s running Google’s mobile OS on a lilttle laptop that’s the size of a Sony VAIO X. Read on for all the photos!

Google Chrome OS might not be far off, but that’s not stopped laptop manufacturing giant Quanta from pushing on with Android. This Android smart-book you see here is only a prototype, but you can see how thin and light it is – and unlike the VAIO X, it feels surprisingly sturdy still, so it won’t snap in your manbag

It’s running on a Snapdragon 1GHz processor, but that was the only detail we managed to eke from the reps on hand. Still, with big names such as HP, Dell, Sony and Toshiba all partnering with Quanta for their notebooks, don’t be too surprised if we see something similar hitting shelves in the near future.

It does look kinda cool. It would be interesting to know:
    1. what the street price might be.
    2. if it can access the Android Market.
    3. if any “smartphone” hardware is equipped (e.g. touchscreen, GPS, accelerometer, …).

No Market on this prototype, I’m afraid, and while it remains a Quanta product rather then a big name laptop label’s, price will be MIA too sadly.

If it’s going to be a smartbook, then it has to have all the smart stuff that make smartphones smart…eg: touch screen, 3 and 4G access, GPS, accelerometer, 5MP camera with flash, and all the other fine goodies. If it’s just a netbook with a smartphone OS then why would anyone bother to buy it?

It’s a fair point – I think the major selling point would be the fanless system, epic battery life and quick boot. But even without those other bells and whistles you mention, Android’s file management needs to be improved to run properly on a full sized machine, as we found on the Acer Aspire One D250 recently. But man, doesn’t it look pretty?
