Remember the Mangrove 7? This chunky tablet from C-Motech caught our eye last month when it was announced thanks to its strange combination of a big 7-inch screen, and Windows Mobile 6.5. We stumbled across one nestled away at a Qualcomm showcase in London today, so decided to give it a prod and grab some photos for you. Read on for the full gallery!
After playing with the Archos 5 Android slate and catching Dell’s next MID on video, we’ve grown used to tablets being svelte, slick little numbers. The Mangrove 7 most definitely isn’t. There’s nothing wrong with the screen width, but the case is incredibly thick and heavy, to the point where it seems like a suitable weapon for close combat. You certainly wouldn’t want to hold it to your ear to make calls, and yet as you can see in these shots, it’s capable of it.
Mangrove 7 Windows Mobile tablet: Courier beater?
But all that bulk hide some impressive power inside the Mangrove 7. 3G and Wi-Fi are inside, and that WVGA screen looks positively tasty in the flesh, and as much as we’re surprised to say it, Windows Mobile 6.5 seems to work on it. WinMo’s crippling flaw on mobiles is the difficulty of managing to press any of the tiny icons on screen – here, it’s not a problem, and we like the honeycomb and Zune-ish menus at this size.
The Mangrove 7 also packs in Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 1GHz processor, so it’s got the potential to be fast, but we couldn’t really put its through its paces in the brief window we had to toy with it.
Unfortunately, there are still no plans for a Mangrove 7 release in the UK, but take a look at the odd couple pairing of Windows Mobile and MID right here in our gallery. Would you take this over Android?
