This may look like an ordinary plaster, but Proteus Biomedical’s e-plaster is actually a disposable heart rate monitor that’ll keep a tab on your pulse, and beam the results onto the net, for your doc to check out remotely!
Proteus has been working with Qualcomm to bring this disposable e-plaster to market. It’s got heart rate gear, a battery and wireless skills onboard to sling your BPM up online, and will last from one to two weeks a time.
Proteus has also been working on a smart pill, with a battery that kicks in when the capsule lands in your stomach, which again sends data up to the web (to a secure site, of course) via a nearby gadget – a phone, say – and can even keep an eye on what other medication you’re taking. In other words, your doctor will know if you’ve been taking your pills on time or not, without having to take your word for it.
There are no plans to bring the pair to the UK just yet, but it’s clever idea as population increases and health care systems become increasingly strained, and could help free up hospital beds worldwide. Between this and the Wii Vitality Sensor, we’d say the future of the NHS is bright.
