Samsung Tocco Lite

Gadget fans will remember 2009 as the year touchscreen blowers went from the play things of first adopters and nouveau posers to bargain techie essentials. The Samsung Tocco Lite is the latest cheap mobile treat to land on our doorstep. So how does it measure up compared to cut price rivals like the LG Pop and HTC Tattoo. Read our Samsung Tocco Lite review now and we’ll give you the complete lowdown.

Pick up the Samsung Tocco Lite and you’ll struggle to see a big difference between it and its older, full-size bro’. That’s because it looks and feels very much the same. But it’s what the inside that counts, right? And under the hood, this pared down cell is all about keeping costs down.

See, there’s no 3G on the Samsung Tocco Lite, meaning jumping online is something you’ll only really want to do if you’ve got more than a few minutes to kill. Likewise, the snapper has been taken down from 5 megapixels to a mere 3.2MP.

However, that’s not to say the Samsung Tocco Lite isn’t a decent handset at the price. For just £90, it’s surprisingly clever and stands up well against the likes of the LG Pop. The touchscreen edges its Korean rival easily, with texting in landscape mode nice and straightforward.

At a slimline 11.9mm, it slides easily into your pocket and the 400×240 3-inch screen is ample for checking out basic mobile apps, if not for watching clips on the go. The Touchwiz UI is great for customising and the kids will coo over it.

The aforementioned 3.2MP snapper is adequate and measures up well to its budget competitors. But the Samsung Tocco Lite is lacking in some key departments. There’s no 3.5mm jack for your own headphones, although there is an adapter in the box. Why not just build it in?

At its core, the Samsung Tocco Lite is a great basic handset. But with the likes of the HTC Tattoo pushing the boundaries of what basic should mean, it’d have been nice to see a few added extras, such as GPS and Wi-Fi, crammed in. As a first touchscreen for the kids the Samsung Tocco Lite is great. If you’re after a top notch upgrade, this isn’t it.
