Square EnixJapanese gaming giant Square Enix, famous for the Final Fantasy franchise, has a crack team working on its very first “global game”, the company’s CEO revealed this week. The publisher’s already dabbled in online gaming, so what on earth has it got in store?

Speaking at the Montreal Games Summit in Canada this week, Square Enix CEO Yoichi Wada said Eidos Montreal, a studio it acquired when it bought Eidos earlier this year, was working on its first “global game…[it] would be the first collaboration between Square Enix and Montreal. We would like to be able to create an new title that is made by the group as one.”

Final Fantasy XIV unveiled at E3!

We’d love to think the phrase “global” hinted at a massively multiplayer online game, but even if it simply means parent and subsidiary companies collaborating, it’s an exciting prospect. Eidos Montreal is already working on two big titles, Thief 4 and Deus Ex 3, and while Wada wouldn’t reveal anything more about the new game, we’ve got our fingers crossed it’s something just as high profile.

If it’s a resurrection of an existing series, we’re hoping it’s a Square Enix game: we’d much rather get a new Kingdom Hearts, Parasite Eve or Dragon Quest than yet another Tomb Raider or Hitman. We’ll shout up as and when anything gets official, but in the meantime, start speculating!
