Spotify is barely one year old, but the music streaming sensation is already closing the gap on online music giants, and even overtaking a few too: new research now pegs Spotify as more popular than Last.fm in the UK!
Market research agency GfK NOP’s just published the findings of its latest “Connected Life” study, quizzing 2,000 UK internet users on what services they use most, and it suggest Spotify’s rise has been nothing less than meteoric.
When it comes to digital music, there are few surprises at the top, with iTunes favoured by 50 percent, followed by Amazon (24 percent) and RealPlayer. But coming up fast is song streaming Spotify, used by 11 percent of those polled. That puts it above Napster (4 percent) and even UK-based Last.fm (7 percent).

That’s an eye opening stat considering Last.fm has been scrobbling tunes since 2002, and has the backing of huge media giant CBS, whose digital arm bought the start-up in 2007.
The survey also found that 60 percent of users stream music from the web, suggesting that Spotify’s potential audience base is growing rapidly too. If Spotify can achieve this in just one year, what will the music scene look like when it hits even more mobile platforms? Can Last.fm even get a look in? Expect some even bigger battles in the future for this new online music market.
