Youtube already shows its many videos of cats falling off things in 720p but from next week you’ll be able to feast on clips in full 1080p HD quality. Could this mean more movies and TV shows for the video sharing site?
Video uploads for normal Youtube users will still be limited to 10 minutes in length but the current 2GB size limit is likely to get a boost.
On the official Youtube blog, the video sharing site also announced that clips already uploaded in 1080p quality will be re-encoded to take advantage of the change.
Youtube has said that after extensive testing of the new capabilities, it’s not worried about supporting the far larger file sizes.
As Youtube’s already done a deal with Channel 4 to stream current and classic shows through the site, the move to bigger file sizes could also herald more full length content on the video site.
It’s good to see Youtube still innovating and adding features, especially with rival Vimeo just making the move into mobile on iPhone and Android handsets.
