An interesting little program has just quietly slipped on to the iPhone App Store, the PressReader iPhone app. It’s a fantastic little program that lets you check out newspapers from around the world in their print format, straight from your iPhone. Wait, isn’t that what Apple was planning to do with the Apple tablet?
The PressReader iPhone app is an ace little program in itself. You can check out more than 1,300 publications worldwide, with every article, headline and Sudoku grid placed exactly as they would be on the page, and with UK rags such as The Guardian available, you won’t be lost for local content. You can even scroll through the archives.
Apple tablet: e-reader rumours gain strength
The PressReader iPhone app – which is also available on BlackBerry App World – does raise some interesting questions about Cupertino’s plans for the Apple tablet though. There have been rumours the company has been pitching the slate, which may run iPhone OS, as an e-reader, and reaching out to big titles to provide content subscriptions. But if the PressReader iPhone app were to run on the tablet, all those negotiations would be for nought – you could just download them all anyway.
Can Apple beat the PressReader iPhone app for price? It’s currently free to download, but in-app purchases of titles will set you back a not too shabby 59p a pop. Apple, the bar’s been set.
