Twitter recently announced it would add location information to tweets, now it seems that new feature will bring local trending topic lists. Say goodbye to seeing America saying “goodnight” just as you’re crawling out of bed, and hello to complaints about London buses or northern drizzle.
Over in the Twitter API Announcements Google Group, home to a hardcore band of Twitter developers, Twitter has announced a new developer preview for its Trends API. The latest set of features available to application developers includes lots of local data that will allow local Twitter trending topics lists.
Raffi Krikorian, of Twitter’s Platform team, made the announcement:
“We’ve hard from lots of users that trending topics…are a fun way to figure out what’s going on in the Twitter-verse. The one feature that we’ve heard over and over is “what’s going on where I am?” To answer that, we wanted to give you a heads up regarding the new Trends API. The API will open up trending information that is specific to a number of locations around the world.”
So at this point, Twitter is not creating local trending lists for every location but instead opening up access to trends from major cities around the world. With London among the biggest tweeting cities, it’s bound there but expect to see Manchester, Cardiff and Birmingham in the frame too.
