The Ricoh GXR system is very clever, and yet at first glance incredibly simple too. It leaked last night, but now the GXR is official: There’s a single camera unit into which you slot lenses, except the camera unit itself doesn’t contain a sensor, instead that’s packaged inside the lens attachments.
The attachments are completely sealed, dust-proof, and just the start of a complete reinvention of photography. Read on and see how the Ricoh GXR system is a godsend for serious snappers.

The Ricoh GXR system means lenses, sensors and even image processing chips can be packaged in the same box, ready to be slotted into the GXR body. Ricoh says the system means the latest sensor and processing technology can be guaranteed at all times, while different sensor types can be paired with different lens types to give the best results.
Another benefit of the Ricoh GXR system is that the lenses and sensors do not need mounting hardware in between them, since they’re sealed together. That means a thinner profile than any other “compact” snapper. It’s even less girthy than the Olympus E-P1 PEN.
There’s shake correction built-in too, and an optional optical viewfinder, although it’ll set you back an extra £219, on top of £419 for the body and at least £300 for a lens. It’s clever, but the Ricoh GXR is also pricey.
