The Ricoh GXR system is here! We’ve grasped the world’s first camera to cram the lens and sensor in a detachable unit and taken it for a spin. Check out the Ricoh GXR in our hands on photos!
The Ricoh GXR feels solid. Sure, it’s a bit plasticky compared to the metallic heft of the Olympus E-P1 but it’s thinner too, and changing lenses is much easier. The lenses, or “camera units” as Ricoh is calling them, click into the body with a neat sliding action. Once in place, they zoom, and focus with manual action, as well as automatically.
The lenses are smart too. Some feature built in, pull-out lens hoods, while Ricoh has shown designs for some with built in lens caps, which open and close as the camera is switched on.
Ricoh GXR system: now official!
There’s a pop-up lens in the top of the Ricoh GXR, as well as a hotshoe that can be used with an external flash gun or an optional (and pricey) electronic viewfinder.
Around the back of the Ricoh GXR there’s a whopping great 3 inch LCD. There’s also a neat interface and a new “Direct” button that gives one-touch access to a host of settings.
Where we’d normally talk about the specs of a camera, the Ricoh GXR makes life tricky. Since it bundles a sensor with each lens, sealed inside the Camera Unit, it’s tricky to pin the Ricoh GXR down. There’re options ranging from 10 megapixels upwards, and some lenses pack an ISO of 3200 for low light shots without the flash.
