ShazamMusic recognition service Shazam got a big facelift on the iPhone today, with the launch of a new Shazam Encore app. It’s faster, with more powerful search and new recommendation facilities. But the free Shazam iPhone app? That’s just had a crowbar taken to its knees, with new users only able to tag five tracks per month. Want to cheat in pub quizzes? Now you’ll have to pay!

Shazam Encore for iPhone and iPod touch has just hit the iPhone App Store. For a one off price of £2.99, it’s a handy new version that lets you share tags on Twitter, find songs similar to the ones you’ve caught a snippet of and even enter car mode when stuck in a dock, so you can see what’s playing on the radio.

Unfortunately, the free Shazam app iPhone owners have come to love and rely on has had a limit slapped on its tagging abilities. In a bid to make buyers opt for the Encore version new users can only tag five songs per month, and with 10 songs in the standard music round at your local pub quiz, that means you’ll be relying on your trusty noggin much more, or scoring much lower!

Anyone who’s already nabbed the free Shazam iPhone app can still use it as before, but any curious music collectors who’ve just picked up an iPhone 3GS might want to consider putting down for Shazam Encore instead.
