As gorgeous as the new iMac is, with its lavish 27-inch display and aluminium case, it’s still missing the touchscreen skills we’ve seen a slew of all-in-one Windows 7 rivals ship with. Now though a modded version with a proddable display is up for sale. Want to flick your way through Snow Leopard with a finger? Read on for the full info.
Californian custom Mac company Troll Touch has been shoving touchscreens on to Apple’s machines for decades, and while it’s taken a couple of weeks, it’s now shipping the newest 21.5 and 27-inch iMac desktops with touchscreens baked in.
You can pick up the new iMac, in both 2.66GHz and 3.06GHz flavours, with the resistive touchscreen out of the box for between $2,299 and $3,699 (£1,370 – £2,200), or if you’ve already put down for one straight from Apple, you can buy the touchscreen tech to install yourself for $1,099 or $1,699 (£650 or £1,000) depending on iMac size.
That’s a hefty price to pay, but until Apple adds touchscreen tech to a new iMac, it’s the best way to jump around on screen with one like a Sony VAIO L. The new Troll Touch iMac is available to order now, and if you’re looking for an easy way to import, we suggest you check out Bundle Box.

Isn’t your title misleading seeing as the iMac HASN’T gone touchscreen? I would suggest the best way to go touchscreen on the iMac isn’t to dish out thousands for the Troll touch but just buy the new Magic Mouse which is touch intuitive. I don’t envisage anyone holding their hands in the air for hours at a time whilst they operate a desktop despite how cool the minority report scene is. A ‘touchscreen’ mouse makes much more sense.
It depends where you put the iMac. Somewhere like a kitchen/dining room area or a living room, it’s surprisingly intuitive to do just that, at least for basic web grazing – I’ve tried with an Eee Top and it’s surprisingly natural. But yes, there’s no doubt that a Magic Mouse would be ever so slightly cheaper!
