A new analyst report suggest Apple is working on a UTMS/CDMA hybrid iPhone due to launch in Q3 2010. By making the successor to the iPhone 3G compatible with both forms of network, Apple will be able to sell one model globally. But what you it mean for you? Read on to find out…
Analyst firm OTR Global says that the “world-mode” iPhone will add compatibility with CDMA2000 networks (like Verizon’s US network) while retaining support for UMTS 3G networks (like those operated by O2, Vodafone and Orange). The change will be possible thanks to a new hybrid chip from Qualcomm.
The next gen iPhone is also reported to boast a 2.8in screen rather than the current iPhone’s 3.5in display. Could this be a move to differentiate the new model from the rumoured 10in Apple tablet?
OTR also suggests that the follow-up to the iPhone 3G will be built by Asustek rather than the current iPhone manufacturer, Hon Hai.
Creating a world-mode iPhone would mean you’d be able to move easily move your phone between networks if you’re a globetrotting type. Great for us international men of mystery here.
