Twitter has begun rolling out the literally-named Project Retweet, it’s official integration of the retweet. Retweeting is simply when a Twitter user shares an interesting tweet by someone else. Should you be excited? Read on to find out…
Like Twitter Lists and tweet notifications, Project Retweet is being rolled out to Twitter users in stages. The official Twitter Status blog says:
“We’ve just activated a feature called retweet on a very small percentage of accounts in order to see how it works in the wild. Retweet is a button that makes forwarding a particularly interesting tweets to all your followers very easy.”
The new Retweet icon will be added at the bottom right of each tweet. On the pages of people you follow there’ll be an icon that indicates whether or not you’re receiving retweets from them.
There’s also an Undo function if you want to take back a retweet. Could that undo button be added to all tweets? We’re sure it’s something Stephen Fry would support.
Project Retweet is sure to annoy some hardcore Twitter fans as official retweets do not appear to allow you to add comments to the content you retweet.
The current “unofficial” retweeting method – adding RT to the front of a tweet – allows commentary and most users tend to add something to tweets they share.
