iPhone 3GSApple is testing iPhone prototypes with built-in RFID readers, according to rumours based on a number of patents filed by the firm. Read on to find out why this could reinvent mobile payments…

RFID (Radio Frequency Identification) allows devices to sense embedded chips and exchange data without making contact.

Apple has filed several RFID related patents for an ID app capable of using an RFID sensor, a way to sense and connect to WiFi networks with RFID and a touchscreen RFID tag reader.

Embedding RFID readers into the next generation iPhone would enable tons of new features from swipe payments to grabbing information from RFID enabled objects.

Apple could also create a new payment system based on the current iTunes payment system. Imagine a world where you could buy your coffee by simply waving your iPhone in front of an RFID reader. We’d end up spending even more in Starbucks than we already do.

    Hey Hey
So, Apple Insider always get the links, but they ‘found’ the story from this one which I wrote in advance of them. They never attribute, and I’ve come to hate them for it, particularly as I gave them links for a decade.
