Canon’s new P150 scanner does a good job of working with any computer away from the mains, but what if you could cut out the middleman entirely and remove the need for lugging a computer around with you? That could happen sooner than you think, with Canon hinting at full featured, high quality office kit that plugs straight into your smartphone.
We spoke to Canon European marketing manager Tim Brosnihan about the possibility of plugging a scanner straight into handsets for slapping documents straight on there. If the P150 can slot straight into a PC’s USB port, why not a phone’s eventually? Brosnihan told that “we can see the possibility in the future to connect with phones.”

“People are carrying their BlackBerrys and iPhones and are using them not just for personal use but business,” he said. Power efficiency is the main restricting factor, he added, saying that although “we’ve got excellent energy efficiency here [with the P150], still what impact would it have?”.
Of course, there are plenty of ways to scan text straight on to an iPhone already, but connecting to a dedicated device would mean you could port high resolution, print ready images across too. We’ll let you know if and when a Canon iPhone scanner becomes reality.
