MSN Music quietly slipped in free, browser based music streaming yesterday along with the restored download service. While it’s still in closed beta, we’ve been testing it out, but there’s a wee little problem. It may run in your browser, but only if it’s Internet Explorer, or Firefox. And on a PC. Sorry guys, MSN says no Macs allowed!
While testing the MSN Music streaming service, we discovered across a little clause in the browser based music belching service. As with the 30 second snippet streaming that’s open to all, it only works on Internet Explorer 6 or above, or Firefox 2 on PC. And for the latter, you’ll still need to install a Windows Media player plug-in, meaning if you use Mozilla’s browser at work, the chances are it’ll still be out of bounds, just like a desktop app like Spotify would be.
MSN Music adds free music streaming
You can still test out most of the other features on the MSN Music streaming service on other browsers mind: we tried it out on Chrome, and Firefox and Safari for Mac and you can still browse titles, construct playlists and add tracks to the queue. But the song player won’t load, and the Play button on songs does nothing.
We’ve dropped Microsoft a line to find out if there are any plans to correct this should the MSN Music streaming feature roll out more widely, and we’ll update if and when we hear back. In the meantime, look out for our full preview later on today.
