iTunesApple’s made a big deal of how many apps it’s shifted and how many apps are in the App Store, racking up over 100,000 approved. But how many of that legion of applications actually get downloaded? Read on for some surprising figures…

According to AppsFire, an app tracking and sharing service, of the 100,000+ applications in the iTunes App Store, by the time you get to the 1000th most popular app only 1.76% of iPhone users own the application. Past the 2000th most popular and the number of users with the app installed is little more than a blip.

That figure essentially means that of 100,000 apps on the iTunes App Store, approximately 98,000 of them are largely left unsold and unloved.

But while so many apps are unsuccessful, it doesn’t mean the App Store itself is not a roaring success. The Android Market has around 10,000 apps but obviously lacks the breadth of choice available in the iTunes App Store. The question really is – which app environment has the most quality applications top choose from?
