The Acer neoTouch has been gazmuped by all the hype surrounding the epic HTC HD2. But the Windows Mobile 6.5-toting cell drew plenty of attention when it was first unleashed. So the question is, is it worth laying down your hard earned for? Read our complete Acer neoTouch review now for our verdict on this Microsoft-mad mobile.
The Acer neoTouch’s 3.8-inch screen might seem measly next to the HD2’s huge 4.3-inch version, but it’s still hefty and is undoubtedly this WinMo smartie’s biggest draw. At 480×800 videos look ace and browsing was particularly nippy, thanks in no small part to the 1Ghz Qualcomm Snapdragon under the hood.
Being a Windows Mobile 6.5 device, the Acer neoTouch should be handy for work, but the inclusion of a rather laggy, resistive touchscreen is utterly infuriating and means that simple tasks can cause extreme frustration. Why when all the major players are at least seeing the capacitive light are some mobile phone players persisting with resistive versions in what are supposed to be top notch phones.

Because make no mistake, the Acer neoTouch does have smartphone skills. There’s Wi–Fi, 3G and GPS on board. The Google Maps app is excellent, giving you access to Latitude and Street View, so getting lost is a nigh on impossibility. But it’s all let down a tad by Windows Mobile 6.5. Sure you can tap into the likes of Flickr from the home page, but as an OS it doesn’t compare well to Android and its next-gen style.
You’ll also find that the camera struggles to take decent snaps in low light. The flash is weedy and at 5 megapixels, the Acer neoTouch doesn’t stand toe-to-toe with the best Sony Ericsson phones out there.
With so many mega screen mobiles hitting the shelves, it’s difficult to recommend the Acer neoTouch. The HD2 promises much and the Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 and Motorola Milestone will soon be landing with huge screens and a better OS.
