Sony Ericsson SatioSony Ericsson’s slick new skin for the Xperia X10 might be headed to Symbian phones, but anyone hoping for a bit of backwards compatibility with the Sony Ericsson Satio had better guess again. The Japanese-Swedish outfit has confirmed to us that it won’t be getting an update to join in with its newer sibling’s Timescape social networking japes.

Steve Walker, head of portfolio planning at Sony Ericsson, confirmed to us that, although the new skin will be cross platform, it won’t be applied to existing Symbian Sony Ericsson handsets, like the 12 megapixel Sony Ericsson Satio. “We don’t intend to go retrospectively back to the Satio,” he told us.

Anyone who’s just slapped down the cash for a Sony Ericsson Satio, only to discover the much tastier Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 is just around the corner, will be disappointed by the news, but we can see why the company is going about its business this way. The Satio sports a rubbishy resistive screen, while the X10 uses a capacitive panel with iPhone-like responses when prodded.

When Sony Ericsson drops a Symbian handset with the same skin, it’s possible it’ll use the same capacitive touchscreen tech: the Nokia X6 has already proved it’ll work with Symbian.

I think Sony Ericsson found a good way to irritate their customers. For two weeks the Satio was the all new super handset from SE. Even though the software from the X10 may not fit the Satio one could aks himself why on earth Sony Ericsson didn’t gave their Satio a capacitive screen!

Yup – it’s my main gripe with the Satio. I find it fascinating that huge players like Nokia and Sony Ericsson took as long as they did to realise they really shouldn’t be using resistive in their flagship smartphones. The iPhone’s only been around for what, two years now?
