Modern Warfare 2′s shocking terrorism level has been causing a stir since it was first announced but now we have first hand details of the gameplay. Read on for more…
Infinity Ward’s decision to include a skippable level where the player is tasked with killing civilians in an airport while undercover in a terrorist group has been extremely controversial. But now we have more details on what the level involves.
The US Entertainment Software Rating Board has published a report on its website revealing the title’s gameplay and story line in considerable detail.
It describes the airport terror mission as “the most intense depiction of violence” in the game. The level involves gunning down “several civilians” with the player “given a choice to participate in the killings (e.g. players can shoot a wounded civilian that is crawling on the ground), or walk by and observe without opening fire.”
The ESRB report reveals that whatever you choose “civilians scream and emit pools of blood as they are shot to death.” This level of sheer violence is no doubt the reason for Infinity Ward’s decision to allow players to simply opt out of playing the level entirely.
The reviewer also reveals a host of other details likely to send the Daily Mail into hysterics. Within the multiplayer game, players can unlock emblems for their character including a cannabis leaf and a depiction of a joint.
Dialogue in Modern Warfare 2 also contains frequent swearing in both English and Russian, so there’s an opportunity for bilingual offense.
The ESRB has given Modern Warfare 2 a “Mature” rating in the US which is its second strictest rating. It means only players over 17 are entitled to purchase the game. British certification board, the BBFC, has awarded it an 18 certificate.
