Creative Zii EggCreative has announced a surprise new product, displaying a working model of its first ebook reader at its AGM. The device, currently called the Mediabook, will use the firm’s Zii platform. Read on to find out more about Creative’s Kindle fighter…

There’s been a glut of new ebook readers recently with the Amazon Kindle finally coming to these shores, Sony’s e-reader line and the US launch of the Barnes & Noble Nook.

However, Creative appears to be preparing a fully featured tablet. Could it be getting set to compete with the much-rumoured Apple tablet.

The Creative Zii Mediabook has a colour touchscreen, built-in text-to-speech functionality (which won’t please the book publishers) and an SD card slot.

The firm says it is already in talks with 10 international and Far Eastern publishers to provide content for the Creative Zii Mediabook. Plans include newspapers and magazines as well as fiction and textbooks.

Sadly, no one managed to get a snap of the new Creative device. So we’ve just got the styling of Creative’s Zii Egg media player as a guide to what it might look like. And there’s no news on pricing or a UK launch yet.
