BBC iPlayerIf you’ve opted for Freesat to get your cheap HD TV fill ahead of Freeview HD, you’ve bet wisely. The BBC iPlayer on-demand service is headed to the platform as soon as the end of this month, Auntie’s announced!

Writing on the BBC Internet blog, Rahul Chakkara, controller of TV platforms at BBC Future Media and Technology said that BBC iPlayer will begin rolling out in beta phase “by the end of November”. BBC iPlayer is already available through Virgin Media set top boxes (As well as the Wii and PS3 game consoles), but it’ll be the first time the service has landed on a free to air system.

BBC iPlayer on Freesat has been specially crafted to work with an interactive telly standard, he continues: “MHEG-5 is a standard that has been used for developing and presenting interactive television in the UK for nearly a decade. Recently, the Digital Television Group supported by BBC R&D, has extended the standard to use the interaction channel for handling Internet video.”

We’ll be sure to shout up once we know precise roll out dates for BBC iPlayer on Freesat, as well as who gets to trial it and when.
