Nintendo DSi The Nintendo DSI XL is a pretty big deal but the next version of Nintendo’s portable gaming champ could be even more exciting. Bosses at the Japanese gaming giant are working on plans to add unlimited 3G data to the next version of the Nintendo DS. Jump through to find out why…

Nintendo high-up, Satoru Iwata, has said that the firm is considering including unlimited 3G data access in the next Nintendo DS. His theory is that iPhones and similar smart phones cost too much for many people.

“I’m interested because it’s a new model in which the user doesn’t bear the communications cost,” says Iwata. “Only people who pay [large amounts] a month can be iPhone customers.”

Iwata has made it clear that Nintendo needs to work out some details before it can bring unlimited 3G to the Nintendo DS. It’s likely that a model with unlimited data would require a price rise.

However, Iwata has spoken in the past about bringing VOIP to the Nintendo DS, so it’s clear he’s thinking hard about the future of the portable.

Adding 3G to the DS would make sense in its battle with the Internet dependent PSP Go.
