Nokia’s finally pulled the plug on its N-Gage games platform, announcing this afternoon that its much maligned stab at attracting movile thumb-twiddlers is going the way of the dodo.
It’ll be a slow and lingering death, however. Nokia says that “N-Gage games can be purchased until the end of September 2010. While the N-Gage.com site together with the N-Gage Arena and other community features will remain in operation throughout 2010.”
Instead of pushing N-Gage games, Nokia’s Ovi Store will now evolve into a home for games from both Nokia and third party publishers. However, Nokia is clear: “We will no longer publish new games for the N-Gage platform.”
The move won’t come as a huge surprise to mobile mavens. Although an innovative take on multiplayer mobile gaming, N-Gage struggled to attract a high volume of next-gen games. For anyone who’s already purchased N-Gage titles however, there’s no need to worry.
“Your games are safe,” says Nokia. “All your purchased N-Gage games will continue to work on your N-Gage compatible mobile device and they’re yours to keep. However, community features of the games will not be functional after 2010.”
