We said when we spied the mysterious Flip Video remote a few weeks ago that a new type of gadget was headed to the line of simple camcorders, and sure enough here it is: the FlipShare TV. No, it’s not a smoke alarm, but a small set top box to stream home video right into your living room.
Back when networking giant Cisco snapped up Pure Digital, the Flip Video maker, earlier in the year, we predicted video streaming in some form was headed to the range, and the FlipShare TV appears to be the first fruit of this new approach. Spotted in an FCC filing over in the US, the FlipShareTV uses a USB dongle to stream video from FlipShare software on a PC to a TV, which can be connected by HDMI should the urge take you for hi-def You’ve Been Framed hijinks.
Flip Video remote spotted: what’s it for?
Is the FlipShare TV a smart move on Cisco and Pure’s part though? Sticking a dongle in, having a PC switched on and plugging in yet another set top box is actually quite an elaborate procedure when you think about it, and one that’s at odds with Flip’s main selling point, ease of use. Why not just stick Wi-Fi in a new Flip camcorder,or let it beam pictures straight to a TV adapter instead?
There’s no word on a FlipShare TV pricing or shipping date just yet, but for anyone with more home video of paddling pools and birthday parties than DVDs in their collection, we’ll be sure to shout up when they emerge.
