Cult carnage fest Aliens vs Predator won’t hit consoles until next year, but we’ve just a first play with the bloody battle royale. Want to know how it holds up and who’s best? Read on for pics and impressions!
If you were worried that Aliens vs Predator would turn into the gaming equivalent of the terrible films from this here decade, don’t be: it’s an insane, bloody and well balanced game that takes three character classes from their prime (Note “Aliens” in the title) and sticks them in a fight to the death.
We had a play on straight up death match multiplayer with all three characters in Aliens vs Predator, aliens, predators and marines, and came away addicted, and impressed by how even the match was. Even though predators come toting invisibility, lasers and focus jumping (you can aim to essentially teleport to anywhere visible from where you’re standing), they still don’t stand a chance if an alien is sitting on the ceiling on top of them.
Sneak up behind someone in Aliens vs Predator and you can pull off a stealth kill by pressing square (we tested the PS3 version) – it’s a gory and humiliating way to dispatch someone, and easier said than done to avoid in the open maps. The cinematics that follow a successful pounce are spectacular, with heads being ripped off and spears going through throats, and all add to the black humour and addiction of the game.
If we’re honest, the controls could do with a rethink (you have to click down on the thumbpad to sprint, which is spectacularly unwieldy) and the graphics aren’t going to wow anyone, but there’s always so much going on on screen at one time in Aliens vs Predator, from shimmering predators stalking you and aliens scrabbling on the walls to gun blasts, blood spilling and infra red vision for the dreadlocked Arnie foes that you won’t notice.
Now if only Sega would hurry up and unleash Aliens vs Predator on Joe Public already. Check out some quick hands-on snaps in the gallery, and stay tuned for more coverage from the Euro Gamer Expo in London.
