Nintendo DSi XL: jumbo gaming headed to UK

That grande version of the Nintendo DSi? It’s real: presenting the Nintendo DSi XL. It’s a 4.2-inch version of Ninty’s handheld gaming rig, with a bigger screen and stylus to get older gamers in on the action, and it’s just been made official in Japan. But it’s coming to the UK too, and we know when. Read on for the pictures and details.

As rumoured just yesterday, the Nintendo DSi XL ups the screen size from the DSi while keeping the form factor near identical. The Nintendo DSi XL is slightly thicker than the 18.9mm DSi at 21.5mm, but it’s barely noticeable. What is though is the massive stylus accompanying the Nintendo DSi XL: you won’t be losing that any time soon.

Battery life is also upscaled with the Nintendo DSi XL: you’re looking at four or five hours per charge at max screen brightness, up from three to four on the DSi, and 13 to 17 on the lowest settings. At 314g, it is however a full 4 percent heavier than the DSi.

It’s out next month in Japan, where it’ll be called the LL rather than XL, but Nintendo UK has confirmed to us it’ll be heading to Europe in the first quarter of next year with a price tag higher than the DSi’s – It’ll cost around £135 in Japan, but we’ll let you know as soon as Ninty outs its own currency translation for it. In the meantime, feast on all the pictures of the Nintendo DSi XL right here!

Another month, another DS configuration thats almost the same as the last one. Clearly Nintendo think consumers are morons.

It’s an intriguing one. I can see how a bigger DSi would make gaming easier for older folk. But at the same time, I don’t see how Ninty will market it without patronising its potential audience.

  5. Andy says:

I don’t see much of a point to the new DS, but it’s not meant for me.

Whether it’ll actually draw in older players I don’t know, but it’s a good way to try and expand the market even more than it already is.

  6. So they’re just gonna keep adding letters? I can’t wait for the Nintendo DSi LL XS OMG WTF BBQ IV

  7. Joe Minihane says:

I think this is a really smart move. My Gran loves her DS, but would much rather the screen was bigger. As Andy says, if you’ve got a DSi, why bother? If you haven’t, this could be the time to get one. There are still some great games to be played, not least Chinatown Wars.
