When the Archos 5 Internet Tablet was first teased, we already knew we’d be in for a gadget-shaped treat. Packing in Google Android, it promised to take the stunning media tablets unleashed last year and add a mobile OS that’s fast becoming the hottest thing in tech. Loading up a media player with Android is an inspired move and one for which the chaps at Archos should get a hearty pack on the back. The Archos 5 Internet Tablet is a sleek PMP, managing to best the old Archos 5 thanks to a better UI and a slimline feel which belies its plentiful 4.8-inch screen.
Filling the Archos 5 Internet Tablet up with your myriad files is also easy as, thanks to file support which takes in MP3, AAC, WMA, FLAC and Ogg music formats and MP4, WMV and MKV for those who want to watch clips on the go. This is very much a device meant for movies. The screen is a stunner and we definitely preferred watching movies on this than the new iPod touch. The WVGA resolution is ace and Larry David’s bald spot looked shiny and clear when we watched a few episodes of Curb Your Enthusiasm.
However, it should be said that video is the Archos 5 Internet Tablet’s main skill. The size feels a tad too bulky if you’re reliant on your PMP for tunes only and you’d be better off going for Apple’s effort instead. Likewise, the lack of Android Market, replaced here by the Archos AppsLib store, is a probelm. There are next to no add-ons worth grabbing. It’s a shame, because it’s hard to recommend the Archos 5 Internet Tablet over the iPod touch when it can’t measure up in such a major area.
As a web device, the Archos 5 Internet Tablet is ace. Browsing over Wi–Fi feels sharp and zippy, even if the design of the browser could be a little more intuitive. Be aware that the 500GB model is twice as thick as the 32GB version. But that’s a small price to pay for such a capacious hard drive.
If you’re weighing up whether to go for the Archos 5 Internet Tablet or an iPod touch, it’s a tough call. But we’d say if you’re a movie nut, plump for the Archos. If you want an all rounder, the Apple remains top of the pile.
